My name is Jennifer and I blog over at PinkWhen.com. I am sharing this guest post today for Crystal while also sending love and prayers for her and her family to have strength and understanding during this difficult time. As a Southern gal, we like to look to amazing tried and true recipes to help comfort us during difficult times. This purple hull peas recipe is one of those comforting recipes. It doesn’t take away the pain, but it gives you the nourishment and strength to keep moving. I hope you and your family enjoy this recipe as much as we do.

I have to admit, I was slow on the bandwagon to eating purple hull peas, or sometimes known as field peas. I was slow on the uptake because I was eating recipes that didn’t quite cut the mustard. When you taste something that isn’t amazing, you usually don’t have much of a desire to make it.

One day I was introduced to this simple recipe, and it has completely changed the way I look at purple hull peas. In fact, I keep bags in my freezer now and it’s always a big hit when we make them with dinner. I only add a few simple ingredients, but boy does it change the flavor and make this recipe simply delicious.

Here is what you will need to make this amazing side:

  • 1 pound purple hull peas
  • 3 slices of bacon
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • salt and pepper to taste

In a 3 quart pan melt butter and cook bacon on medium heat. Once bacon is thoroughly cooked, take a knife and cut into small bite sized pieces.

Pour the purple hull peas into the pan and cover with water, adding garlic powder and salt and pepper. Bring water to a boil, and then turn down to simmer and cover, cooking for 40 minutes. Stirring occasionally.

When you are ready to serve, dish into a bowl and mix up a little crumbled corn bread. (Here is a good cornbread recipe if you need one.)

It’s one of my favorite side dishes, and it’s completely southern.

I hope you enjoyed this purple hull peas recipe, and make sure to add it to your meal/shopping list soon. It’s amazingly filling, and oh so good. You can usually find the purple hull peas at Farmer’s Markets fresh, or in the vegetable side of the frozen food section at your local grocery. Enjoy!
